Founded around 550 CE by Raja Maru at Bharmour, Chamba boasts an uninterrupted 1,200-year lineage shielded by its rugged mountains.
In 920 CE, Raja Sahil Varman shifted the capital to its present plateau, naming it after his daughter, Champavati. This isolated ancient era preserved immaculate copper-plate inscriptions and iconic stone Shikhara temples, leaving an unbroken historical record.
